Melt and Liquify with RBD [Houdini 20.0 .hiplc file]
This approach is a little different than the usual methods of modifying FLIP viscosity attributes and point deforming geometry. Instead, this uses a growth solver to trigger scaling down RBD objects pre-solve, along with breaking their corresponding constraints. Next, FLIP and/or Pyro is sourced from the RBD inside faces, then meshed together for some unique and fun effects.
This setup is for all levels of Houdini users, but also built with training in mind and as a resource for those that are learning or are new to Houdini. This file covers real-world processes used in professional settings including RBD sop solvers, Pyro and FLIP sourcing and simulation, VDB meshing, a straightforward approach to cache management with PDG, and basic render setup in Karma XPU.
Everything in the above movie is contained in the file, there are no external assets.
This includes:
- Four variations on the melting effect with corresponding Karma render setups. The file uses text because it’s easy to generate, this is meant to be replaced with the geometry of your choosing.
- Cache management with PDG - simply cook the TOP network and you’re ready to go.
- Intuitive growth solver for setting start points for the effect. Add as many start points as you like and place them easily.
- Basic Pyro and FLIP sim
- Sticky notes with explanatory details throughout
Although I do my very best to respond to email and messages, I’m not able to provide tech support for digital products. Updating and replacing geometry in this project assumes a foundational to intermediate level of Houdini skills. There are no restrictions on the use of digital files from Rings of Saturn other than not reselling or sharing. You are free to use it whole or in part on commercial projects. If you end up building something cool with it I’d love to see it! Enjoy!
